You sat in rows, and when the bell rang you stopped — mid-sentence, mid-thought — and walked to the next room to do it again. You were graded, in part, on how quietly you waited and how well you followed instructions.
None of that taught us to think. All of it taught us to comply.
That structure wasn’t invented here, and it wasn’t built around the child. It came from the Prussian model — compulsory attendance, age-graded rooms, standardized testing, ranking by obedience — a system whose openly stated aims included conformity and loyalty to authority. America adopted it. And the men who paid to scale it — Carnegie, Rockefeller, Ford — needed exactly one thing from it: people who showed up on time and did as they were told.
Nobody has to prove a plot in a back room. Whether it was intended is still argued. The design is not. The output is not: a system built to produce people who are manageable, not people who are whole.
And then the script kept running.
We left that room and walked into the next one. We took the job and learned to ask permission again. We signed the mortgage because that’s what you do. We got married on the timeline we were handed. We opened the account, picked the plan, believed the expert, took the advice — each step laid out in advance by media, by authorities, by people whose comfort depended on us not asking too many questions.
We were told this was a life. It was a script. And every line of it was written by someone with something to gain.
